I work with oil pastel and oil sticks on watercolor paper and canvas. I paint what I grew up seeing in Guatemala, and also things about it I couldn’t really see until I left. To that I add urban portraits of the cities where I’ve lived. I came to oil pastel because I haven’t found its chromatic intensity in any other medium, and because it lets me work color directly without a brush. I keep it raw and dense, unblended. What moves me is color more than subject. Why some combinations pull harder than others, why they feel different.

Trabajo con óleo pastel y oil sticks sobre papel de acuarela y canvas. Pinto lo que crecí viendo en Guatemala, y también lo que no supe ver de allá hasta que me fui. A eso sumo retratos urbanos de las ciudades donde he vivido. Llegué al óleo pastel porque su intensidad cromática no la encontré en ningún otro medio, y porque me deja trabajar el color directo sin pincel. Lo dejo crudo y denso, sin difuminar. Lo que me mueve es el color más que el tema. Por qué unas combinaciones atraen más que otras, por qué se sienten distinto.
